5 Stress Busters That Work

Sometimes, there’s just no getting around the stress that life can bring. We’re constantly bombarded by all kinds of events – from the big things, like starting a new job, to the little ones, like simply managing to get the kids to school on time. And while there are many times we can’t avoid all that stress, we can take it upon ourselves to make things a bit more worry-free.

So, to help you get through those tougher times, I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite scientifically proven stress busters:

  • Eat an orange. Oranges are loaded with Vitamin C, which studies show dramatically lower the production of stress hormones within minutes. In fact, once you eat it, your blood vessels relax and blood pressure lowers.
  • The next time you’re on the verge of a meltdown at work, try this tip that doesn’t even require you to leave your desk: Lift your knees up until your feet are on the seat and tuck your chin in while breathing slowly. That exercise will increase oxygen and blood flow throughout your body.
  • As soon as you wake up, hug yourself. Seriously, go ahead and wrap your arms around your body. It may sound like a funny thing to do, but that movement actually releases tension in your lower back.
  • Watch a “Harlem Shake” video – or any funny video. Researchers say that laughter releases endorphins into your blood, instantly improving your mood. Other studies show that laughing lowers your heart rate and blood pressure.
  • Sing your favorite song! Experts say that singing decreases tension in your face, neck, and shoulders. Another benefit? It boosts the production of feel-good endorphins and lowers your heart rate.
